Graveside services for Carter H. Matthews, Jr., 82, of Butler will be held on Friday, September 2, 2016 at 11:00 am at Oaklawn Cemetery in Ft. Valley, Georgia. Mr. Matthews passed away on Tuesday, August 30, 2016, at his residence.

Mr. Matthews was born February 3, 1934, to the parentage of the late Emily Norton Matthews and Carter Hutchinson Matthews, Sr.

He attended Farragut Naval Academy in St. Petersburgh, Florida. He also attended and graduated from Emory at Oxford Preparatory School. Later, Mr. Matthews attended the University of Georgia where he graduated with a degree in a Business Administration.

Mr. Matthews proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. During the Korean Conflict, he served on the aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Midway, as a plane captain. After leaving the Navy, he pursued his favorite pastime, flying. He earned his pilot’s license and flew wherever possible.

He was the President of CH Matthews & Sons, Inc., part owner of TLC Lawn Care and Peach Lawn Care.

On September 18, 1955, he married his one true love, Ouida Matthews.

He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Charles Norton Matthews. 

He leaves behind Ouida Matthews, his wife of sixty one years; four children, Anne Roland (Mike) of Butler, Nancy Wood (Stewart) of Ft. Valley, Beth Smith (Mike) of Plains, and Bill Matthews (Melissa) of Homosassa, Florida; one daughter-in-law, (Julie Watson) of Mauk.

He leaves behind seven grandchildren; Dustin Roland (Nikki) of Perry, Dylan Wood (Kaylen) of Ft. Valley, Ethan Smith and Cauldin Smith of Plains, Cody Matthews and Hannah Matthews of Mauk, and Robert Roland of Butler. He also leaves behind two great-grandchildren; Dalton Carter Roland and Carter Hutchinson Wood.

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 6 to 8pm at the funeral home.
