Mattie Estelle Spinks Jarrell, 102, of Butler, GA, died Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at home. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, October 5, 2017 at Union United Methodist Church on Mattie Estelle Spinks Jarrell Road. Mrs. Jarrell was born April 10, 1915 in Taylor County, GA. She was the youngest of seven children and the daughter of the late Annie Wade Spinks and William Alonza Spinks. For 78 years, Mrs. Jarrell operated Jarrell's Grocery, the historic country store and community gathering place located on GA Highway 208, north of Butler. She and her late husband, Fred Stanford Jarrell, Sr. ran the store together for many years, and after his death, Mrs. Jarrell continued this landmark operation on her own, with the help of her two sons, Freddie and John. Mrs. Jarrell was a devoted leader of Union United Methodist Church where she served in numerous roles through the years, including Sunday School Director and Treasurer. She also served as Treasurer of Union Cemetery for many years. Mrs. Jarrell was a master flower and vegetable gardener and generously shared with her family and many friends. Mrs. Jarrell was predeceased by her husband, Fred S. Jarrell, Sr. and her son, John William Jarrell, Sr. Survivors include her son, Fred S. Jarrell, Jr. and wife Patsy, daughter-in-law Nina Jarrell, grandchildren Stan Jarrell and wife Stacy, Jay Jarrell and wife Kim, Susanne Carter and husband Jeff, and Jennifer Carpenter and husband Keith, along with seven great-grandchildren, Ansleigh Jarrell, Caitlyn Jarrell, Allie Carter, John Will Jarrell, Jake Carter, Hadley Jarrell, and Anna Beth Carpenter. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Union United Methodist Church, 129 West Old Wire Road, Butler, GA 31006.
