Funeral services for Franklin Ross McCants, 104, of Butler, will be held on Friday, June 21, 2024, at 11:00 am at Bethel Congregational Methodist Church with the Dr. Doug Carter, Rev. Jay Frazier and Rev. Harley Gentry officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in Historic Union/Hays Campground Cemetery. Mr. McCants passed away at home on Tuesday, June 18, 2024.
He was a lifelong member of Bethel Congregational Methodist Church where he served as song leader and church deacon for many years. He was a Gideon and a charter member of the Taylor County Camp Meeting Board which was established in 1939. He also served on the Congregational Methodist Mission Board for many years. He loved his church and donated the land on which Bethel Congregational Methodist Church now stands.
He graduated from Butler High School in 1937 and began a lifelong career in farming and agriculture. He owned McCants Poultry Farm and Hatchery from 1947-1970’s. He also owned Macon Tire Shop in the ‘60’s and McCants Poultry Farm and Eggs in the late ’60’s, as well as McCants Tire and Recapping from 1960-1972, and he owned and operated a Holiday Inn in Bainbridge, Georgia and Big Indian Feed Mill in Perry. He was a board member of the Production Credit Association in Upson County from 1950 – 1960. Mr. McCants was a cattleman from 1940 - 2022 and an avid gardener and enjoyed woodworking.
He was born January 1, 1920, to the late Rentz Edward McCants and Mattie Anthony McCants; and was preceded in death by his siblings, Alice Young, Ethel McCants, Ed McCants, Howard McCants, Ralph McCants, Horace McCants and Asbury McCants; and his wife of 75 years, Bernice Peed McCants.
Survivors include three sons, Richie (Lynne Taylor) McCants of Butler, Terry (Minda Douglas) McCants of Butler and Jerald (Terri Burt) McCants of Danielsville, GA; seven grandchildren, Michele, Nicole, Jay, Jonathan, Aaron, Caleb and Bethany; fifteen great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren; plus numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Taylor County Camp, c/o Susan Peed, 110 Robinson Road, Butler, GA 31006 or Bethel Congregational Methodist Church, 1516 Thomaston Road, Butler, GA 31006.
Pallbearers include great-grandsons, Isaac McCants, Aidan McCants, Micah McCants, Aaron McCants, Caleb McCants, Payton Butterfield, and Clae Mathis. Honorary pallbearers include family and friends, Scott Young, Rentz McCants, Bobby Peed, Clifford Clark, Sug (Rubin) Henderson and William Carter.
