Graveside services for Julian Monk Whatley, 94, of Reynolds will be held on Tuesday, August 10, 2021 at 11:00 am at Hillcrest Cemetery. Mr. Whatley passed away on Friday, August 6, 2021 at The Oaks Nursing Home in Marshallville, GA.
He was a 1944 graduate of Reynolds High School and received a BA in Physics from Emory University in 1948. He attended Mercer University from 1973-1975 where he received his Master of Liberal Studies in Marriage and Family Concerns.
He was a former Mayor of Reynolds, City Councilman, County Commissioner of Taylor County, president of the RIDC, president of Kiwanis Club, president of the Council on Aging, long time board member of the Citizens State Bank, and Trustee of the Baptist Retirement Communities and served many years in the Georgia National Guard. The Middle Flint Council on Aging hired him during their first year of operation as the case manager for the Community Care for the Elderly Program. He owned and operated various businesses in Reynolds including Whatley’s Warehouse and Gin, John Deere Agency, Dial Gas Company, Battleview Antiques and Reynolds Manufacturing Company.
Mr. Whatley was a Sunday School teacher and Deacon at Reynolds First Baptist Church and later was interim pastor. He pastored Taylor Mill Baptist Church in Reynolds and Hebron Baptist Church in Sumter County
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford Edwards Whatley and Mary Monk Whatley; brothers Dr. Edwards Clayton Whatley, Clifford Wallace Whatley, Leonard Saunders Whatley; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Whatley; and his wife, Sue Whatley.
Survivors include two loving daughters, Debbie Hyla (Bob) of Atlanta, GA and Donna Lindley (Charlie) of Carrollton, GA, as well as his beloved granddaughters Katie and Madison Lindley of Atlanta; brother, William Henry Whatley of Atlanta; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Reynolds First Baptist Church, PO Box 452, Reynolds, GA 31076.
In light of current COVID-19 conditions and concerns, the family requests a socially distanced service.
