Wayne Smith Obituary

Graveside services for Wayne Calvin Smith, 66, of Reynolds will be held on Tuesday, September 1, 2020 at 10:30 am at Wesley United Methodist Church Cemetery.  Wayne passed away on Saturday, August 29, 2020.

He was a 1972 graduate of Taylor County High School.  He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in biology at Georgia Southwestern where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.  He also received his Specialist Degree in Ed. Leadership from Georgia State University.  Wayne taught high school science at Southland Academy and Taylor County High School.  He was named curriculum coordinator at Taylor County High School and was later elected Superintendent of Taylor County School System, serving 25 years in that position. He loved the students and dedicated staff of Taylor County, and he worked hard to ensure that taking care of students was the first priority.  Wayne was an advising member of several state educational boards.

Wayne was a member of the First Baptist Church of Butler.  He was also a member of The Georgia Cattleman’s Association and the Taylor County Kiwanis Club.  Wayne was a charter member of the Board of Directors of The Golden Rule.

Wayne spent much of his time working, maintaining, and elevating the 4th generation Smith Farm. He loved planting and harvesting times. Wayne was particularly successful breeding and raising cattle. He took great pride in “the farm,” but more than anything, he took great pride in his family. Wayne, affectionately known as “Tac,” loved taking his grandchildren to visit the farm, riding the tractors, and checking on the cows. Another source of joy for Wayne was his time with his golfing, fishing and hunting buddies.  What Wayne’s friends and family will remember most was his unwavering love, pride, and support for his girls, Terry, and his Mama.

He was preceded in death by his father, James T. (Jimmy) Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Terry Timmerman Smith of Reynolds; three daughters, Colby Smithson (Jamie) of Brookhaven, GA, Ansley Bailey (Ben) of Kathleen, GA and Sydney McWhirter (Gray) of Madison, GA; his mother, Phyllis Smith Heath of Butler, GA; four brothers, Allen Smith (Dawn) of Centerville, GA, Steve Smith (Dana) of Butler, GA, Todd Smith (Hayley) of Warner Robins, GA and Dane Smith (Judy) of Butler, GA; two sisters, Edie Baxley (Jeff) of Baxley, GA and Tia Sanderlin of Hahira, GA;  six grandchildren, Kathleen McWhirter, Daphne McWhirter, Smith McWhirter, Mac Smithson, Benji Bailey and Andi Bailey; Kent Short (adopted son); numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
